The Big Trail: Mythical Western might appear creaky to some watchers, although it continues to be considered one of the most impressive early talkies. John Wayne was “found” for featuring role, and already shows his laidback charm. Mrs. Brown, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter: A stupid reprieve for a film, with Herman and his Hermits heading for London to enter their greyhound in a race. In between the anticipation they harmonize “There’s a Sort of Quiet All around the Planet” Cast includes Herman’s Hermits, Stanley Holloway, Mona Washbourne, Sara Caldwell, and Javelin Percival. The Vows: Astronomically pleasing story of an ambitious youthful Dubliner who takes on the task of constructing and managing a band made up of other Dubliners who harmonize ’60s-type music! Disarmingly involving from the word go, with charismatic cast of unknowns, and the film is filled with irresistible music. This film is truly a genuine treat. Cast includes Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Dave Finnegan, Bronagh Gallagher, Felim Gormley, Glen Hansard, Dick Massey, Johnny Murphy, Kenneth McCluskey, Andrew Hefty, and Colm Meaney. Dragonfly: An ER doctor, mourning for his lifeless spouse, acquires a succession of signals from her-containing messages from youthful subjects who’ve had near-death experiences. What do they mean? More drawn out than it needs to be, although a captivating and abnormal tale of one guy’s metaphysical odyssey. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Kathy Bates, Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Linda Seek, Susanna Thompson, Jacob Vargas, Jay Thomas, and Matt Craven. (103 minutes, 2002)
Black Orpheus: Street car conductor Mello and countrygirl Dawn fall in love in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. Musical updating of the Orpheus and Eurydice fable is beautifully performed and prompted. Cast includes Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Lea Garcia, Adhemar Da Silva, and Lourdes De Oliveira. (103 minutes, 1959)
